The correlation between students' mastery of reading comprehension and writing ability at eighth grade of SMPN 5 Metro in academic year 2013/2015

Reading is one of the important skills which are taught in the school. By reading, the students can gain information and expand knowledge. Moreover, it can be used not only for enriching the vocabularies but also for mastering grammar directly though the passage. Moreover, each text is unique in regard to the structure of the text is genre, vocabulary, and language. Moreover, writing is fundamental importance to learning, to development of the person in each learner and success in educational system. Many students feel hard to learn writing, because writing does not only need good vocabulary and grammatical but also need good arranging the word and the sentences to make a good paragraph. The research objectives are (1) To identify how far the score competence ofreading comprehension an optimal yet, (2) To identify how far the score competence of students in writing ability an optimal yet, (3) To identify how far the correlation between competence of reading comprehension an optimal yet and competence of students in writing ability an optimal yet.
The research is conducted on February, 2rd 2014 in SMP N 5 Metro. The research design in this research is correlation study. It means that the researcher does not give any treatment. There is no explanation about the material before. The researcher only will give the test to the students. The research used cluster random to get the sample. From the technique sample, the researcher got 32 students.
Based on the result of calculation by using correlation test, it is obtained thatThe correlation between reading comprehension mastery and writing ability is 0,76Ha is accepted if robserved^tabie. The value rObserved( 0,76) >rtabiefc>r the significant level 5% = 0.361 and 1% = 0.463. It means that the hypothesis is accepted and Ho is refused. Based on the hypothesis test, it can be concluded that there is positive and significant correlation between students' mastery of reading comprehension and writing ability at the eighth grade of SMP N 5'Metro Academic year 2013/2014 and the level of correlation is high based on interpretation value.
