Speaking is one of four skills in English. It has a prominent role in life because speaking is a productive skill. Through speaking, people can express their ideas, interest and feeling. In senior high school, speaking is one of skills which must be mastered by students. The students are expected to be able to speak English. However, the researcher finds that there are many students who can not speak English well. There are many students who have low score in students' speaking ability. The problem formulation in this research is Is there any effectiveness of using discussion method toward speaking ability? and the research objective is to know whether there is the effectiveness of using discussion method toward speaking ability.
The research design in this research is pre test - post test design. This experimental method deals with two groups; an experimental class and a control class. The experimental class is the class which gets the treatments by applying discussion method and the control class is the class which gets the treatments by using the technique common used in the school. The use of control class is aim at proving whether the progresses of scores possibly got by the researcher in the experimental class are really caused by the application of the treatments in the class but not because of the repetition of the test.
Based on the result of calculation by using t-test, there are two test namely the similarity test and the difference test. In the similarity Test, at the significance level (a) =5%,it is obtained that ttabie is 2,02 and ttabie in significance level 1% =2,70. Meanwhile tobserved =3,85tobserved > ttabie. It means that there is difference the speaking ability in experimental class and control class. In the difference test, at significance level 5% =1,68 and significance level 1% =2,42 and tobServed=3,85. It means that Weired > ttabie. It means that the average result of speaking in experimental class is higher than the average result of speaking in control class. Based on the explanation above, the researcher concludes that Ha is accepted and Ho is refused. It means that there is significant effectiveness of discussion method toward students' 'speaking ability at the tenth grade at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Metro academic year 2012/2013.
