Writing is one of important skills in English which must be mastered by students. Through writing, the students are able to express their ideas, interests, minds, thinks. There are many kinds of writing. In this research, the researcher will use writing recount as one of variables which investigated. Writing recount tells about the experiences in past time. To be master writing recount well, the students must be master the components in English. There are three components in English namely vocabulary, grammar and phonetics/phonology. Vocabulary is one of the components which must be mastered by the students. It will help the students when they make a sentence, phrase, clause or paragraph. The students are expected to master vocabulary in order they are easy to make writing recount paragraph. In fact, most students have limited vocabularies. Their vocabulary mastery is still low. Many students do not understand the meaning of words in English. The problem formulation of research 1) is there any positive and significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and writing recount ability? The research objective 1) to know whether there is positive and significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and writing recount ability.
The research is coonducted on February, 10th 2015 in SMK N 3 Metro . The research design in this research is correlation. The researcher does not give treatment to the students. The researcher uses vocabulary mastery and writing recount tests. The sample is twenty three students in the tenth grade. The researcher gets the sample by using cluster random sampling.
Based on the research result, it is obtained rObserved = 0,95. The correlation between vocabulary mastery and writing recount ability at SMK N 3 Metro academic year 2014/2015 is positive and significant. It is proven by the result of significance test. It is obtained that We^ed is 13,94. The value t is compared with t table for the significant level 5% to two tails dk = n-2 = 21, so t table is 2,080. It is clear that t observed is higher than t table. It means that Ha is accepted. It means that there is positive and significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and writing recount ability m SMK N 3 Metro academic year 2014/2015.
