iGenetics a molecular approach
Welcome to the study of genetics, the science of hered¬ity. Genetics is concerned primarily with understanding biological properties that are transmitted from parent to offspring. The subject matter of genetics includes hered-be molecular nature of the genetic material, the ways in which genes (which determine the characteristics of nisms) control life functions, and the distribution and behavior of genes in populations.
Genetics is central to biology because gene activity underlies all life processes, from cell structure and func¬tion to reproduction. Learning what genes are, how genes are transmitted from generation to generation, low genes are expressed, and how gene expression is regulated is the focus of this text. Genetics is expanding o rapidly that it is not possible to describe everything e know about it between these covers. The important winciples and concepts are presented carefully and thor-eaders who want to go further are advised to K for information on the Internet, including search-ms for research papers using Google Scholar or the .bMed database supported by the National of Medicine, National Institutes of Health, at vpubmed.gov. It is assumed that your experience in your intro-■^iology course has given you a general under-Lr.ding of genetics. This chapter provides a contextual mework for your study of genes.
