The first two editions of this book, which were entitled Management: Functions and Behavior, attempted to create an awareness of the fact that any organization's ability to succeed in an environment of change rests with its management. In this respect, we showed that decisions in most successfully managed organizations depend upon environmen¬tal conditions and managerial judgment relating to a particular situa¬tion. Accordingly, a contingency view of management theory and prac¬tice remains as a significant feature of this edition.

Based on favorable responses from persons adopting earlier editions of the book, this revision also retains the approach which integrates the functions of management with behavioral concepts and appropriate quantitative methods. In particular, operations management tech¬niques and quantitative tools are discussed as they relate to decision making, planning, and controlling. The focus of these discussions, how¬ever, remains on the particular management function or process under consideration, and the quantitative materials are presented in a de¬scriptive manner to emphasize substance in addition to technique. For those who wish to pursue these materials in more depth, a detailed coverage of various operations management models and quantitative techniques is included in Appendixes B and C at the end of the book.

Revisions throughout this edition are numerous. A statement of pur¬pose precedes the learning objectives set forth at the beginning of each chapter and serves to introduce chapter materials in a brief and concise manner. Key terms have been added at the end of all chapters to provide a review of major concepts presented in each chapter. New and revised review questions and problems have been added through¬out the book, and some 20 percent of the case materials are new. Of major importance, a Student Study Guide has been developed to ac¬company this edition. By integrating text and study guide materials, a reinforcement of major concepts is assured on a chapter-by-chapter basis.
