The meetinghouse where citizens from several villages gathered was a scene of bitterness and rancor in that year of 1812. one description of a meeting leaves a taste of the local dialogues. the question under discussion provoked such interest and temper that the people adjourned from the town house to the open green, where the dabate was continued. as a vote was take on the issue, people divided on either side of road. one captain of privateering fame pointed jauntily to his followera and shouted, I began alone on this quesion, and now, you see. I have a respectable company. to that an opposing orator from the quaker village replied,yes and old cloven-foot commenced his carer alone, and hes got a respectable following too.
